# TUSQ-QD ## Overview TUSQ-QD is a combination product containing hydrocodone bitartrate and guaifenesin. Hydrocodone is an opioid cough suppressant. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps loosen mucus in the airways. ## Primary Indications * Symptomatic relief of cough and to help loosen mucus. ## Adult Dosing * **Tusq-QD:** One tablet by mouth every 4 to 6 hours as needed. * Maximum dose: Not to exceed 6 tablets in 24 hours. ## Pediatric Dosing * Safety and efficacy have not been established in pediatric patients. ## Dose Adjustments * **Hepatic Impairment:** Use with caution and consider a reduced dose. * **Renal Impairment:** Use with caution and consider a reduced dose. ## Contraindications * Hypersensitivity to hydrocodone, guaifenesin, or any component of the formulation. * Significant respiratory depression. * Acute or severe bronchial asthma. * Gastrointestinal obstruction. * Hypercapnia. ## Adverse Effects * **Common:** Drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, lightheadedness, itching. * **Serious:** Respiratory depression, severe allergic reactions, neonatal withdrawal syndrome, serotonin syndrome (with coadministration of serotonergic agents). ## Key Drug Interactions * **CNS Depressants (alcohol, benzodiazepines, other opioids):** Additive CNS depression. * **Serotonergic Agents (SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs):** Increased risk of serotonin syndrome. * **CYP3A4 Inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, ritonavir):** May increase hydrocodone plasma concentrations. * **CYP3A4 Inducers (e.g., rifampin, carbamazepine):** May decrease hydrocodone plasma concentrations. ## Monitoring * Respiratory rate and depth. * Level of consciousness. * Bowel function (for constipation). * Signs of abuse or diversion. ## Clinical Pearls * Tusq-QD contains an opioid and carries a risk of misuse, abuse, addiction, and life-threatening respiratory depression. * Advise patients to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until they know how this medication affects them. * Constipation is a common side effect; recommend adequate fluid intake and consider stool softeners. * If cough persists for more than 7 days, recurs, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider. *** **Disclaimer:** This information is for educational purposes only and does not substitute professional medical advice.
