# Tavaborole
## Overview
Tavaborole is a topical oxaborole antifungal agent. It inhibits fungal protein synthesis by reversibly inhibiting methionyl-tRNA synthetase (MRS), an essential enzyme for fungal cell protein synthesis.
## Primary Indications
Topical treatment of onychomycosis of the toenails due to *Trichophyton rubrum* or *Trichophyton mentagrophytes*.
## Adult Dosing
Apply a thin layer of tavaborole topical solution (5%) to the affected toenail(s) once daily for 48 weeks.
## Pediatric Dosing
Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustments are typically required for renal or hepatic impairment.
## Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tavaborole or any excipients in the formulation.
## Adverse Effects
Common adverse effects include application site reactions such as itching, redness, irritation, and pain.
## Key Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions have been identified with topical tavaborole.
## Monitoring
Monitor for signs of hypersensitivity or local irritation. Onychomycosis treatment is long, and patients may not see full results for up to a year after treatment completion.
## Clinical Pearls
Tavaborole is for topical use only. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Ensure the nail plate is clean and dry before application. Long treatment duration is necessary for effectiveness.
