# Tavaborole
## Overview
Tavaborole is a topical oxaborole antifungal agent used for the treatment of onychomycosis.
## Primary Indications
Onychomycosis of the toenails caused by *Trichophyton rubrum* or *Trichophyton mentagrophytes*.
## Adult Dosing
Apply tavaborole topical solution 5% to the affected toenail(s) once daily for 48 weeks.
## Pediatric Dosing
Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustment is necessary for renal or hepatic impairment.
## Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tavaborole or any component of the formulation.
## Adverse Effects
Common adverse effects include application site reactions such as erythema, itching, irritation, and ingrown toenail.

No significant drug interactions have been identified with topical tavaborole.
## Monitoring
Monitor for signs of local irritation or allergic reaction. Assess for clinical improvement of the fungal infection over the treatment course.
## Clinical Pearls
Tavaborole is a novel topical antifungal with a unique mechanism of action that inhibits fungal protein synthesis. Complete cure may take up to a year after the course of treatment is completed due to the slow regrowth of the nail.
