## Overview

## Primary Indications
Treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients.
## Adult Dosing
The recommended dosage is 300 mg orally once daily, taken with or without food.
## Pediatric Dosing
For pediatric patients weighing 25 kg or more, the recommended dosage is 15 mg/kg orally once daily, not to exceed the adult dose of 300 mg once daily. Dosing for pediatric patients below 25 kg is not established.
## Dose Adjustments
No dose adjustment is necessary for patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. In severe renal impairment, dosage adjustments are required. Consult specific guidelines or package insert for detailed recommendations. No dose adjustment is needed for hepatic impairment.
## Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active component or any excipient.
## Adverse Effects
Common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and fatigue. Lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis may occur, particularly in patients with risk factors. Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is also a potential adverse effect.
## Key Drug Interactions
Potent cytochrome P450 inducers (e.g., rifampin, St. John's wort) can decrease plasma concentrations. Coadministration with drugs that prolong the QT interval should be avoided.
## Monitoring
Regular monitoring of HIV viral load, CD4 count, liver function tests, and renal function is recommended. Monitor for signs and symptoms of lactic acidosis and hepatotoxicity.
