## Oxymetazoline Nasal Spray
### Overview
Oxymetazoline is an alpha-adrenergic agonist that acts as a topical vasoconstrictor. It is available as a nasal spray.
### Primary Indications
* Nasal congestion due to the common cold, hay fever, or other upper respiratory allergies.
### Adult Dosing
* **Nasal Spray (0.05%):** 2-3 sprays in each nostril every 10-12 hours as needed.
* **Maximum:** Do not exceed 2 doses in a 24-hour period.
### Pediatric Dosing
* **Children 6 to under 12 years:** 2-3 sprays in each nostril every 10-12 hours as needed.
* **Children under 6 years:** Use is not recommended. Consult a pediatrician.
### Dose Adjustments
No specific dose adjustments are routinely required for hepatic or renal impairment.
### Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to oxymetazoline or any component of the formulation.
* Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma.
* Patients on monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOIs.
### Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Nasal burning, stinging, dryness, sneezing, temporary blurred vision, headache, increased blood pressure.
* **Serious:** Rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa) with prolonged or excessive use.
### Key Drug Interactions
* **MAO Inhibitors:** Concomitant use can cause severe hypertension.
* **Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs):** May potentiate the pressor effects of oxymetazoline.
* **Beta-blockers:** May lead to an increased risk of hypertension.
### Monitoring
* Monitor for rebound congestion with prolonged use.
* Monitor blood pressure, especially in patients with pre-existing hypertension or cardiovascular disease.
### Clinical Pearls
* Limit use to a maximum of 3 consecutive days to prevent rebound congestion.
* If symptoms persist, discontinue use and consult a healthcare provider.
* Administer upright to minimize swallowing.
