# Sinex (Oxymetazoline)
## Overview
Oxymetazoline is a topical decongestant that acts as an alpha-adrenergic agonist, causing vasoconstriction of the nasal mucosa.
## Primary Indications
* Nasal congestion associated with the common cold, allergies, or sinusitis.
## Adult Dosing
* **Sinex (0.05% nasal spray):** Administer 2-3 sprays in each nostril every 10-12 hours as needed.
* **Do not exceed 2 doses in a 24-hour period.**
* **Duration of use:** Limit use to a maximum of 3 consecutive days to prevent rebound congestion (rhinitis medicamentosa).
## Pediatric Dosing
* **Children 6-11 years:** Administer 2-3 sprays in each nostril every 10-12 hours as needed.

## Dose Adjustments

## Contraindications

## Adverse Effects

## Key Drug Interactions
* **Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and within 14 days of stopping MAOIs:** Risk of hypertensive crisis.
* **Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs):** May potentiate the pressor effect of oxymetazoline.
* **Beta-blockers:** May enhance pressor response.
* **Guanethidine:** May reduce hypotensive effect.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs of rebound congestion, especially with prolonged use.
* Assess for systemic side effects such as increased blood pressure, heart rate, or central nervous system effects, particularly in patients with underlying cardiovascular or neurological conditions.

* Oxymetazoline is for symptomatic relief of nasal congestion only.
