# Potassium Chloride ## Overview Potassium chloride (KCl) is an essential electrolyte used to treat and prevent hypokalemia. It is available in various oral and intravenous formulations. ## Primary Indications * Treatment of hypokalemia. * Prevention of hypokalemia in patients at risk. ## Adult Dosing * **Oral Replacement:** * **Mild Hypokalemia (3.0-3.5 mEq/L):** 20 mEq once or twice daily. * **Moderate Hypokalemia (<3.0 mEq/L):** 40-100 mEq daily, divided into 2-4 doses. Maximum generally 200 mEq/day. * **Maintenance:** 20-40 mEq daily. * **Extended-release formulations:** 8-20 mEq orally once or twice daily.
