# Potassium Chloride
## Overview
Potassium chloride (KCl) is an electrolyte replacement. It is essential for nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and maintaining acid-base balance.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment and prevention of hypokalemia.
* Potassium supplementation in patients receiving diuretics or corticosteroids.
## Adult Dosing
**Hypokalemia Treatment:**
* Oral: Typically 20-100 mEq/day, divided into 2-4 doses. May be given in single doses up to 40 mEq if needed and tolerated.
* Intravenous (IV): Typically 10-20 mEq/hour. See critical care guidelines for higher doses. Maximum infusion rate is generally 20 mEq/hour to avoid cardiac arrhythmias, with higher rates reserved for immediate life-threatening situations and continuous ECG monitoring. Maximum concentration for peripheral IV infusion is usually 40 mEq/L, and for central IV infusion is up to 80 mEq/L. Total daily dose rarely exceeds 200 mEq.
