# Normal Saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection)
## Overview
Normal saline is an isotonic crystalloid intravenous fluid used for fluid and electrolyte replenishment. It contains 0.9% sodium chloride in water.
## Primary Indications
* **Volume resuscitation:** Treatment of hypovolemia due to dehydration, hemorrhage, or shock.
* **Maintenance hydration:** Providing daily fluid requirements.
* **Diluent:** Used as a vehicle for administering compatible intravenous medications.
* **Electrolyte replacement:** Primarily to replace sodium and chloride deficits.
## Adult Dosing

* **Maintenance:** Varies; common rates range from 75-150 mL/hour (approximately 1.5-3 liters/24 hours), adjusted for age, weight, and clinical status.
## Pediatric Dosing

* **Resuscitation:** 10-20 mL/kg bolus, repeated as needed.
* **Maintenance:** Typically 100 mL/kg/day for the first 10 kg, 50 mL/kg/day for the next 10 kg, and 20 mL/kg/day for remaining weight. Daily needs are usually divided over 24 hours.
## Dose Adjustments

## Monitoring
* **Vital signs:** Blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate.
