## Normal Saline (0.9% Sodium Chloride)
### Overview
Normal saline is an isotonic crystalloid intravenous solution used for fluid and electrolyte replenishment.
### Primary Indications
* Volume resuscitation in hypovolemia, shock, and dehydration.
* Maintenance fluid therapy.
* Diluent for intravenous drug administration.
* Wound irrigation.
* Nasal irrigation.
### Adult Dosing
Dosing is highly individualized based on clinical status, fluid deficit, and ongoing losses.
* **Volume Resuscitation:** Typically administered as a rapid infusion of 1-2 liters. Further doses guided by hemodynamic response. Max dose depends on patient's fluid tolerance and underlying conditions.
* **Maintenance:** Varies, often 1-2 liters per 24 hours.
* **Drug Diluent:** Varies based on drug and administration route. Refer to specific drug monographs.
* **Irrigation:** As needed.
### Pediatric Dosing
Dosing is highly individualized based on clinical status, fluid deficit, and ongoing losses, and should be guided by local protocols.
* **Bolus:** Typically 10-20 mL/kg, repeated as needed.
* **Maintenance:** Calculated based on daily maintenance fluid requirements (e.g., Holliday-Segar method).

### Dose Adjustments

### Contraindications

### Monitoring

* Considered the fluid of choice for initial resuscitation in shock.
