# Lorazepam ## Overview Lorazepam is a short-acting benzodiazepine with anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, amnestic, and anticonvulsant properties. ## Primary Indications * Management of anxiety disorders * Insomnia due to anxiety or transient situational stress * Management of status epilepticus * Premedication for surgical procedures ## Adult Dosing * **Anxiety:** 0.5 mg to 2 mg orally three times daily. Maximum daily dose typically 10 mg. * **Insomnia:** 2 mg to 4 mg orally at bedtime. * **Status Epilepticus:** 4 mg slow intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) injection. May repeat in 5 to 10 minutes if necessary. Maximum initial dose 8 mg. * **Premedication:** 2 mg to 3 mg IM one to two hours before surgery, or 2 mg to 4 mg orally the evening before surgery. ## Pediatric Dosing
