# Isoxsuprine hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a vasodilator that primarily acts on smooth muscle, causing relaxation. Its use is limited due to a lack of proven efficacy for many of its former indications.
## Primary Indications
* **Peripheral vascular disease:** Historically used to improve blood flow in conditions like intermittent claudication. However, its efficacy is not well-established by current evidence.
## Adult Dosing
* **Peripheral vascular disease:** 10 mg to 20 mg orally three to four times daily. The maximum recommended daily dose is typically 80 mg.
## Pediatric Dosing
* There is no established pediatric dosing for isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal Impairment:** No specific dose adjustments are established. Use with caution.
* **Hepatic Impairment:** No specific dose adjustments are established. Use with caution.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
* Do not administer intravenously.
## Adverse Effects
* **Cardiovascular:** Hypotension, reflex tachycardia, flushing, dizziness, weakness.
* **Gastrointestinal:** Nausea, vomiting, abdominal distress.
* **Other:** Rash, gastric irritation.
## Key Drug Interactions
* **Antihypertensives:** Isoxsuprine may potentiate the hypotensive effects of antihypertensive medications.
* **Other Vasodilators:** Concurrent use with other vasodilators may lead to additive hypotensive effects.
## Monitoring
* Blood pressure and heart rate.
* Signs and symptoms of peripheral vascular disease.
## Clinical Pearls
* The clinical benefit of isoxsuprine for peripheral vascular disease is not well-supported by high-quality evidence. Consider alternative therapies with proven efficacy.
* Administer orally. Avoid intravenous administration.
* Patients with cardiovascular conditions may be at higher risk for adverse effects.
