# Isoxsuprine Hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a vasodilator agent with beta-adrenergic agonist properties. It is believed to exert its effects by relaxing smooth muscle in blood vessels, leading to vasodilation.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment of peripheral vascular disease, including intermittent claudication and Raynaud's disease.
* Management of cerebrovascular insufficiency.
## Adult Dosing
* Oral: 10 mg to 20 mg three to four times daily.
* Maximum dose: Not well-established, but doses above 20 mg per administration are generally not recommended.
## Pediatric Dosing
* Dosing in pediatric patients is not established. Safety and efficacy have not been determined.
## Dose Adjustments
* Renal impairment: No specific guidelines. Use with caution and monitor for adverse effects.
* Hepatic impairment: No specific guidelines. Use with caution and monitor for adverse effects.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
* Use with extreme caution in patients with significant hypotension or tachycardia.
## Adverse Effects
* Common: Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, flushing, drowsiness, weakness, headache, rash.
* Less common: Hypotension, tachycardia, gastrointestinal distress, blurred vision.
## Key Drug Interactions
* Antihypertensives: Isoxsuprine may potentiate the hypotensive effects of antihypertensive medications.
* Other vasodilators: Concomitant use may lead to additive hypotensive effects.
## Monitoring
* Blood pressure and heart rate.
* Signs and symptoms of peripheral vascular disease.
* Patient's response to therapy.
## Clinical Pearls
* The efficacy of isoxsuprine in treating peripheral vascular disease is controversial, and its use has declined significantly due to a lack of robust evidence supporting its benefit.
* It should not be used as a substitute for proper wound care, exercise, or smoking cessation in patients with peripheral artery disease.
