# Isoxsuprine hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a peripheral vasodilator.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment of peripheral vascular disease (e.g., intermittent claudication, arteriosclerosis obliterans, Buerger's disease).
* Management of cerebrovascular insufficiency.
* Promotility agent in cases of gastrointestinal atony.
## Adult Dosing
* **Peripheral Vascular Disease/Cerebrovascular Insufficiency:** 10-20 mg orally 3-4 times daily.
* **Gastrointestinal Atony:** 10-20 mg orally 3 times daily.
## Pediatric Dosing
There is no established pediatric dosing for isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
## Dose Adjustments
No specific dose adjustments are recommended for hepatic or renal impairment. However, caution is advised due to lack of specific data.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
* Should not be administered immediately postpartum or in the presence of bleeding tendencies.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Hypotension, tachycardia, dizziness, flushing, nausea, vomiting, rash, gastrointestinal upset.

* Heart rate: Monitor for tachycardia.
* Symptoms of peripheral vascular disease: Assess for improvement in claudication distance or other symptom relief.
* Gastrointestinal symptoms: Monitor for improvement in atony-related issues.
## Clinical Pearls
* Efficacy in peripheral vascular disease and cerebrovascular insufficiency is debated and often considered limited.
* Onset of action is typically within 1 hour.
* Effects may be more pronounced in individuals with vasospasm.
