# Isoxsuprine hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a peripheral vasodilator. Its mechanism of action is not fully understood but is thought to involve direct relaxation of vascular smooth muscle, leading to vasodilation and improved peripheral circulation.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment of peripheral vascular disease, including intermittent claudication and Raynaud's disease.
* Management of cerebrovascular insufficiency.
## Adult Dosing
* **Typical Dose:** 10-20 mg orally every 4-6 hours.
* **Maximum Dose:** Not explicitly established, but doses exceeding 20 mg every 4-6 hours are generally not recommended due to increased risk of adverse effects.
## Pediatric Dosing
No established pediatric dosing. Use is generally not recommended in pediatric patients.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal Impairment:** No specific guidelines, but caution advised as drug is renally excreted. Dose reduction may be necessary based on patient's renal function.
* **Hepatic Impairment:** No specific guidelines, but caution advised.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
* Use immediately postpartum.
* Use in patients with congenital heart disease.
## Adverse Effects

* **Gastrointestinal:** Nausea, vomiting, abdominal distress, anorexia.
* **Neurological:** Weakness, nervousness.
* **Other:** Skin rash, gastrointestinal bleeding.
## Key Drug Interactions
* **Antihypertensives:** May potentiate hypotensive effects. Monitor blood pressure closely.
* **Antiplatelet agents and Anticoagulants:** Isoxsuprine may have mild antiplatelet effects; concurrent use may increase bleeding risk. Monitor for signs of bleeding.
