# Isoxsuprine Hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a peripheral vasodilator.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment of peripheral vascular disease, such as intermittent claudication.
* Historically used for cerebrovascular insufficiency and premature labor, but efficacy for these indications is not well-established and it is not recommended.
## Adult Dosing
* **Intermittent Claudication:** 10 mg to 20 mg orally three to four times daily.
* **Maximum Dose:** Typically not to exceed 80 mg per day.
## Pediatric Dosing
* No established pediatric dosing. Use is generally not recommended.
## Dose Adjustments
* No specific dose adjustments are typically required for hepatic or renal impairment, but caution is advised due to potential for accumulation.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
* Do not administer intravenously; it is for oral use only.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Hypotension, flushing, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distress, rash.
* **Less Common:** Tachycardia, weakness, headache, blurred vision, nervousness.
## Key Drug Interactions
* **Antihypertensives:** Isoxsuprine can potentiate the hypotensive effects of antihypertensive medications. Monitor blood pressure closely.
* **Other Vasodilators:** May lead to additive vasodilatory effects and increased risk of hypotension.
## Monitoring
* Blood pressure (especially with concurrent antihypertensives).
* Signs and symptoms of peripheral vascular disease.
## Clinical Pearls
* Efficacy in peripheral vascular disease is controversial and should be used cautiously, often as an adjunct to non-pharmacological measures like exercise and smoking cessation.
* Patients should be advised to rise slowly from sitting or lying positions to minimize orthostatic hypotension.
