# Isoxsuprine Hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a peripheral vasodilator.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment of peripheral vascular disease (PVD) and intermittent claudication.
* Use in cerebrovascular insufficiency.
## Adult Dosing
* **Intermittent claudication/PVD:** 10 mg to 20 mg orally every 3 to 4 times daily.
* **Cerebrovascular insufficiency:** 10 mg to 20 mg orally every 3 to 4 times daily.
* Dosing may be adjusted based on patient response and tolerance, but typically does not exceed 80 mg per day.
## Pediatric Dosing
* Limited data available. Use in pediatric patients is generally not recommended due to lack of established safety and efficacy.
## Dose Adjustments
* No specific dose adjustments are typically required for renal or hepatic impairment, but caution is advised.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to isoxsuprine hydrochloride.
* Use in patients with recent arterial hemorrhage or in those with glaucoma.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Nausea, vomiting, gastric distress, dizziness, weakness, flushing, nervousness, rash.
* **Less Common:** Hypotension, tachycardia, drowsiness, headache, abdominal pain.
## Key Drug Interactions
* **Antihypertensives:** Isoxsuprine may cause hypotension, potentially additive with antihypertensive agents. Monitor blood pressure closely.
* **Other vasodilators:** Increased risk of hypotension.
## Monitoring
* Monitor for signs and symptoms of peripheral vascular disease improvement.
* Monitor blood pressure and heart rate.
* Assess for adverse effects.
## Clinical Pearls
* Efficacy in PVD is controversial and not consistently supported by robust clinical trial data.
* Avoid administration in the immediate post-operative period following surgery.
