# Isoxsuprine hydrochloride
## Overview
Isoxsuprine hydrochloride is a peripheral vasodilator.
## Primary Indications
* Treatment of peripheral vascular disease.
* Treatment of cerebrovascular insufficiency.
* Historically used for threatened premature labor, but its efficacy and safety for this indication are not well-established and it is not a first-line agent.
## Adult Dosing
* **Peripheral vascular disease/Cerebrovascular insufficiency:** 10 mg to 20 mg orally three to four times daily. Maximum dose is generally considered 80 mg per day.
## Pediatric Dosing
There is no established pediatric dosing for isoxsuprine hydrochloride. Its use in children is generally not recommended due to lack of safety and efficacy data.
## Dose Adjustments
No specific dose adjustments are routinely recommended for renal or hepatic impairment. However, caution should be exercised in patients with these conditions due to limited data.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to isoxsuprine.
* Do not administer in the immediate postpartum period for threatened premature labor.
## Adverse Effects
* **Common:** Flushing, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, skin rash, nervousness, drowsiness, headache, hypotension.
* **Less Common:** Tachycardia, palpitations, chest pain, blurred vision, nasal congestion, edema.
## Key Drug Interactions
* **Antihypertensives:** Isoxsuprine may potentiate the effects of antihypertensive medications, leading to additive hypotension.
* **Sympathomimetic agents:** Concomitant use may increase cardiovascular effects.
## Monitoring
* Blood pressure.
* Heart rate.
* Symptoms of peripheral vascular or cerebrovascular disease.
* Signs of adverse effects.
## Clinical Pearls
* Efficacy in peripheral vascular disease and cerebrovascular insufficiency is controversial and not definitively established by robust evidence.
* The oral route is the primary route of administration.
* Patients should be advised to report any adverse effects immediately.
