# Hyaluronic acid
## Overview
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in connective tissues, synovial fluid, and ocular tissues. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Injectable formulations are derived from microbial fermentation.
## Primary Indications
* **Intra-articular injection:** Osteoarthritis of the knee.
* **Ophthalmic surgery:** Viscosurgical device for anterior chamber maintenance and corneal protection during cataract surgery and other intraocular procedures.
* **Dermal filler:** Aesthetic correction of facial wrinkles and folds.
* **Topical formulations:** Skin hydration and wound healing (efficacy less established than injectable forms).
## Adult Dosing
Dosing varies significantly by indication and product.
* **Osteoarthritis of the knee:**
* **Synvisc-One:** 6 mL intra-articular injection once.
* **Synvisc:** 2 mL intra-articular injection once weekly for 3 weeks.
* **Euflexxa:** 2 mL intra-articular injection once weekly for 3 weeks.
* **Durolane:** 3 mL intra-articular injection once.
* **Other products:** Follow manufacturer specific instructions, typically 2-3 mL intra-articular injections given weekly for 3-5 weeks. Maximum of 5 injections per course.

## Pediatric Dosing
No established pediatric dosing for intra-articular or ophthalmic indications. Safety and efficacy have not been studied.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic Impairment:** No dose adjustments typically required as HA is metabolized locally or systemically without relying on specific organ clearance pathways.
## Contraindications
* Active infection in or around the joint to be injected.
* Known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid or its components.
* Skin infection at the injection site.
## Adverse Effects
