# Hyaluronic Acid
## Overview
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in various connective tissues. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Preparations are typically synthetic or derived from animal sources.
## Primary Indications
* **Intra-articular injection:** Osteoarthritis of the knee.
* **Ophthalmic surgery:** Viscosurgical device for maintaining space and protecting corneal endothelium during cataract and other intraocular surgeries.
* **Wound healing:** Topical formulations for promoting healing of certain skin wounds and burns.
* **Intranasal spray:** To moisturize nasal passages and aid in recovery after nasal surgery.
## Adult Dosing
* **Osteoarthritis of the knee:**
* Commonly 20 mg (2 mL) injected intra-articularly once weekly for 3 weeks.
* Alternative regimens exist, including single injections of higher molecular weight formulations (e.g., 60 mg).
* Maximum: Follow product labeling; typically no more than 3-5 injections per course.
* **Ophthalmic surgery:**
* Typically 0.1% to 2% solutions, instilled directly into the anterior chamber during surgery as needed by the surgeon. Concentration and volume depend on the specific product and surgical technique.
* **Wound healing:**
* Topical gels or solutions applied directly to the wound as directed by the product or healthcare provider, often once or twice daily.
* **Intranasal:**
* Sprays typically used as needed, often 1-2 sprays per nostril up to several times daily.
## Pediatric Dosing
* Dosing for hyaluronic acid in pediatric populations is generally not established for intra-articular or ophthalmic indications.

## Dose Adjustments
