# Hyaluronic Acid
## Overview
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring polysaccharide found in various tissues, including the skin, joints, and eyes. It acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. Pharmaceutical preparations are typically derived from bacterial fermentation or animal sources.
## Primary Indications
* **Intra-articular injection:** Osteoarthritis of the knee (pain relief).
* **Ophthalmic solution:** Dry eye disease (lubrication).
* **Dermal filler:** Aesthetic correction of wrinkles and folds.
* **Surgical aid:** Viscosupplementation in ophthalmic surgery.
## Adult Dosing
* **Osteoarthritis of the knee:** Typically 20 mg (2 mL of 1% solution) injected intra-articularly once weekly for 3 weeks. Some protocols may involve 5 injections. Maximum frequency is usually every 6 months.
* **Dry eye disease:** Ophthalmic solutions vary widely by brand. Common concentrations range from 0.1% to 0.4%. Instill 1 drop into the affected eye(s) as needed, often 1-4 times daily. Some formulations are available as single-use vials or multi-dose bottles.
* **Dermal filler:** Varies by product and treatment area. Administered by trained professionals.

## Pediatric Dosing
Established pediatric dosing for intra-articular hyaluronic acid for osteoarthritis is generally not available. ## Dose Adjustments

* **Ophthalmic:** May potentially reduce the absorption of other topical ophthalmic medications. Separate administration by at least 5 minutes.
## Monitoring
* **Intra-articular:** Monitor for signs of infection or inflammatory reactions post-injection. Assess pain relief and functional improvement.
