# Hyaluronic Acid
## Overview
Hyaluronic acid (hyaluronan) is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in connective, epithelial, and neural tissues. Therapeutically, it is used as a viscoelastic agent in ophthalmology, a restorative agent in intra-articular joint injections, and a humectant in topical dermatology.
## Primary Indications
* **Ophthalmology:** Adjunct in cataract surgery, intraocular lens implantation, and corneal transplant.
* **Rheumatology:** Symptomatic relief of osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee in patients who failed conservative therapy.
* **Dermatology/Esthetics:** Correction of facial wrinkles, lip augmentation, and wound healing.
## Adult Dosing
* **Intra-articular (Knee OA):**
* *High molecular weight (e.g., Synvisc-One):* 48 mg (6 mL) injected into the knee once; repeat every 6 months if necessary.
* *Low molecular weight (e.g., Hyalgan):* 20 mg (2 mL) weekly for 5 consecutive weeks.
* **Ophthalmic:** Quantity varies by procedure; generally 0.5 mL to 1 mL into the anterior chamber during surgery.
* **Dermal Fillers:** Dose is strictly patient-specific based on site and desired correction; injected intradermally/subcutaneously.
## Pediatric Dosing
* **General:** No established systemic pediatric indications.
* **Ophthalmic:** Use is limited to specialized pediatric ophthalmic surgery; dosage is determined strictly by the surgeon based on the size of the ocular globe and the specific surgical requirements.
## Dose Adjustments
* **Renal/Hepatic:** No specific dose adjustments established; systemic absorption from intra-articular or topical use is negligible.

## Contraindications
