# Hepamerz (l-Ornithine l-Aspartate)
## Overview
Hepamerz is a combination of the amino acids l-ornithine and l-aspartate. It is thought to reduce elevated ammonia levels in the blood by promoting its detoxification in the liver and kidneys.
## Primary Indications
Hepatic encephalopathy (grades I-III) in patients with cirrhosis.
## Adult Dosing
* **Initial:** 3 to 6 grams intravenously (IV) every 8 hours.
* **Maximum:** Typically no more than 18 grams per day.
* **Oral (if available):** Dosing varies by product formulation and country. Commonly, 3-6 grams orally up to three times daily. Consult specific product labeling for oral dosage.
