# Citral
## Overview
Citral is a mixture of two acyclic monoterpene acyclic alcohols, geranial and neral. It is found naturally in the oils of several plants, including lemon myrtle, lemon verbena, and citrus fruits.
## Primary Indications
Citral is primarily used as a flavoring agent in food and beverages and as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetics and personal care products. There is limited evidence supporting its use as a therapeutic agent. Some research suggests potential antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anxiolytic properties, but these are not established indications.
## Adult Dosing
As a flavoring and fragrance agent, there are no specific dosing guidelines. Usage is typically determined by product formulation and regulatory limits.
## Pediatric Dosing
There are no established pediatric dosing guidelines for citral.
## Dose Adjustments
Dose adjustments are not applicable as citral is not dosed therapeutically.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to citral.
* Use with caution in individuals with sensitive skin, as it may cause allergic contact dermatitis.
## Adverse Effects
* Skin irritation and allergic contact dermatitis.
* Photosensitivity reactions have been reported.
* When ingested in large quantities, gastrointestinal upset may occur.
## Key Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions are established for citral when used at levels typical for flavoring and fragrance.
## Monitoring
Monitoring is not typically required when citral is used at approved levels for flavoring and fragrance. If used investigationaly, monitor for skin reactions and signs of gastrointestinal upset.
## Clinical Pearls
* Citral is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use as a food flavoring agent by the FDA when used in accordance with good manufacturing practices.
* Due to its potential to cause skin sensitization, its use in cosmetics is regulated, with restrictions on concentration in leave-on products.
