# Citral
## Overview
Citral is a mixture of two acyclic monoterpene geometric isomers, geranial (trans-isomer) and neral (cis-isomer). It is a naturally occurring compound found in the oils of various plants, such as lemon myrtle, lemongrass, and citrus fruits.
## Primary Indications
Citral is primarily used as a flavoring agent and fragrance ingredient. In a medicinal context, it has been investigated for potential antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties, but it is not a primary pharmaceutical agent with well-established indications for widespread clinical use.
## Adult Dosing
There is no standard established adult dosing for citral as a therapeutic agent. Its use is generally limited to flavoring and fragrance applications, where concentrations are very low and not quantifiable for medicinal dosing.
## Pediatric Dosing
There is no established pediatric dosing for citral as a therapeutic agent.
## Dose Adjustments
Not applicable as there are no established therapeutic doses.
## Contraindications
* Hypersensitivity to citral.
* May cause skin sensitization and irritation.
## Adverse Effects
The most common adverse effects are related to dermal exposure, including:
* Skin irritation
* Allergic contact dermatitis
* Phototoxicity (rare)
Gastrointestinal upset may occur with ingestion of high concentrations, but this is not relevant to therapeutic use.
## Key Drug Interactions
No significant drug interactions have been established for citral in a therapeutic context due to its lack of established medicinal use.
## Monitoring
Monitoring is not applicable for therapeutic use. For individuals with known sensitivities, monitoring for signs of skin reaction after exposure is advised.
## Clinical Pearls
* Citral is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for use as a flavoring agent by regulatory bodies when used in appropriate quantities.
* Its use as a therapeutic agent is largely experimental, and evidence for efficacy and safety in humans is limited.
* Be aware of potential for skin sensitization, especially with repeated dermal exposure.
